Our client is a family office headquartered in Charlotte, NC with investments in commercial real estate and other vehicles including private equity funds, hedge funds, equities, bonds, and other assets.  It was founded in the 1930s as both an operating business and an investment company focused on Southeastern commercial real estate assets.  The operating business has been sold, and the company continues its mission of owning sound commercial real estate assets and other strategic investments under its third generation of management by the family.

Position Description:

Our client is currently seeking a CFO with deep experience running all aspects of a multifaceted investment business. The CFO will work closely with the President and the Chief Operating Officer and oversee financial planning and analysis related to their substantial portfolio of commercial real estate investments and non-real estate financial investments. The majority of the real estate holdings are located in the Southeast.  The ideal candidate lives in, or is willing to relocate to, Charlotte.


  • Provide leadership on and execution of a wide range of financial transactions
  • Evaluate, strengthen, and manage prudent financial best practices in conjunction with outside development and asset/property management teams
  • Analyze all real estate accounting prepared by third-party managers and investment partners; consolidate same into family office financial statements
  • Analyze all non-real estate financial statements provided by third party custodians; consolidate same into family office financial statements
  • Analyze Addepar investment management reporting provided monthly by third-party multi-family office service providers
  • Maintain all books and records for all corporate (non-real estate) entities of the family office
  • Provide accounting support for real estate and private equity purchase/sale transactions, in both equity and debt positions
  • Review financial closing documents to ensure that settlement statements and other related documents are accurate and complete
  • Work together with third party management/accounting teams and COO to finalize asset-level annual operating budgets
  • Effectively manage cash and cash projections (including tax payments) in coordination with outside accounting team on a weekly basis
  • Regularly evaluate opportunities to recapitalize properties
  • Be aware of and develop tax strategies for investments, holdings, and exits
  • Establish and reinforce parameters for financing, guarantees, and letters of credit, reserves, loan covenants and other obligations to ensure continuity and controls are adhered to and achieved
  • Oversee shareholder and director minutes, annual reports, and registered agent filings provided by outside legal and accounting firms
  • Manage inter-company and inter-entity loans, provide cash management and asset allocation oversight, and prepare and maintain budget for management company
  • Manage AAA accounts and distributions to all shareholders
  • Oversee financial aspects of corporate insurance program including tracking premium levels, policy renewals, coverage amounts and interacting with brokers where necessary
  • Provide support in family estate planning by tracking and overseeing annual gifting process
  • Work with outside accounting firm to track and compile K-1s and other data for tax prep process
  • Coordinate with outside accounting firm on all audit notices and requests for information from various tax authorities
  • Handle payroll and 401k for all employees


  • Family office experience is a plus
  • Real estate development and transaction experience with retail, office, or mixed-use properties is preferred
  • An MBA, CPA or other advanced degree related to real estate or finance is highly desirable
