Vice President / Controller

Company Description:

80-year-old, private real estate investment and development company is seeking a Vice President / Controller to oversee the Company’s diverse accounting department. The Vice President / Controller will work closely with the CEO and directors of business units to support their decision-making.  The candidate should be an outside the box leader – someone willing to challenge conventional wisdom, with strong leadership skills who can sit at the decision-making table and make contributions.  We are looking for a managerial accounting candidate with a focus on developing and monitoring business performance metrics


Position Description:
  • Planning, directing, and coordinating all accounting operational functions
  • Providing management with information vital to the decision-making process
  • Managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of business results
  • Coordinating and preparing internal and external financial statements
  • Managing the budget process
  • Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement, and implementing new processes
  • Evaluating accounting and internal control systems
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting database, as needed
  • Designing accounting systems to ensure transactions are recorded in accordance with tax strategies
  • Hiring, training, and retaining skilled accounting staff

PREFERRED CANDIDATE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Background with real estate transactions and operations. Experience with apartment investment, development, and management is important
  • Knowledge of how to design accounting systems to produce effective management reports
  • Good understanding of taxes and especially how they apply to real estate, families, and trusts
  • Experience working in a family environment
  • Preferred experience with a large accounting firm
  • Experience working in a diversified environment, with multiple properties and different ownership structures
  • Familiarity with cash management, risk management/insurance, IT, etc.

 PRODUCT TYPES (Company is involved in the development and ownership of):

  • Multi-family property development, ownership, and management
  • Commercial income properties (retail, hotel)
  • Land held for future development and investment

  • The candidate must be results-oriented and hold themselves self-accountable
  • Maturity, strong financial acumen, superior communication and listening skills, and knowledge of real estate operations are critical
  • Superior analytical skills
  • Reputation of exemplifying the highest standards of integrity, honesty, and discretion
  • Highly confident of their abilities and be considered a detail-oriented person who can tackle numerous projects simultaneously
  • Self-motivated, well-organized, and results-driven who leads by example
  • Tenacity – follows through with sense of urgency, takes initiative to get tasks accomplished, and balances skepticism with objective analyses
  • Collaboration – Collegial working relationships with staff and advisors
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations to employees, lenders, top management, buyers, and sellers
  • Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret complex business documents
  • Strong working knowledge of Excel and other financial modeling techniques is a must
  • Knowledge of Yardi accounting system preferred
